十年之緣，首次同行｜法鼓文理學院首屆學生赴日本岐阜聖德學園大學短期留學紀實

A friendship that began at the lectern

In December 2015, Professor Sachiyoshi Ninagawa of the Institute of Buddhist Culture at Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University came to Jinshan to lecture on the development of Yogācāra thought in Japan. The following month, President Huimin Bhikṣu returned the visit, speaking in Gifu on the training of clinical Buddhist chaplains at Dharma Drum Mountain. In January 2017 he went again, lectured during the Hōon-kō service, and signed the academic exchange agreement between the two schools. From then on, a yearly visit in alternating directions became the quiet rule between us.

Over ten years the lecture topics ranged from Yogācāra, Jōdo Shinshū and Shinran's view of the Buddhist path to clinical dōsa-hō and scholarly information in the age of AI; during the pandemic the exchange simply moved online and never paused. In December 2019, Professors Keisho Toki and Yoshikuni Kochi raised, for the first time, the idea of student exchange. In September 2024, President Chen Ding-ming led DILA's Dean of Academic Affairs and Research, the Chair of Buddhist Studies, the Library Director and OIA staff to Gifu, where Professor Hung Jen-jou gave the keynote and the two presidents discussed next steps face to face. In December 2025, Professors Masahiro Nakatsuka and Yoshikuni Kochi visited DILA, and it was settled: in 2026, DILA would send two professors to lecture at Shotoku, and, for the first time, a group of students for a short-term study programme.

講壇から始まったご縁

2015年12月、岐阜聖徳学園大学仏教文化研究所の蜷川祥美先生が金山を訪れ、「日本唯識思想の展開」を講じられました。翌月、惠敏学長が岐阜を答礼訪問し、法鼓山における臨床宗教師養成について講演。2017年1月、惠敏学長は再び岐阜を訪れ、報恩講の折に講演するとともに、両校の学術交流協定に調印しました。以来、年に一度、交互に訪問することが、両校の静かな約束になりました。

この10年、講題は唯識、浄土真宗、親鸞の仏道観から、臨床動作法、AI時代の学術情報まで広がり、コロナ禍にはオンライン講座に形を変えて途切れることなく続きました。2019年12月には土岐景昭先生と河智義邦先生が来訪され、学生交流の可能性が初めて話題に上りました。2024年9月、陳定銘学長が教研長、仏教学系主任、図書情報館長、国際事務組の職員を率いて岐阜を訪問、洪振洲教授が基調講演を行い、両学長が今後の協力について直接話し合いました。2025年12月、中塚晶博先生と河智義邦先生が法鼓を訪問された会議の席で、2026年に法鼓から教員2名が聖徳で講演し、あわせて初めて学生を短期留学に派遣することが決まりました。

Seven days of classes, services and temples

Shotoku planned a full week. Lectures moved from the history of Japanese Buddhism to Jōdo Shinshū doctrine and urban propagation, and on to the work of clinical religious chaplains. Students joined a Jōdo Shinshū morning service and discovered that the priest leading it also teaches at the university. On 29 September, Professor Chan Chang, DILA's Secretary-General, lectured in the Faculty of Economics and Information; on 30 September, Dean Zeng Yao-min spoke at the Institute of Buddhist Culture, carrying on the two schools' ten-year tradition of lecturing at each other's lectern. At the student exchange session, DILA students presented Taiwan and Dharma Drum Mountain, and Ven. Zhending's a cappella performance took the room by surprise.

Over the summer, Mr. Chen volunteered three Thursday mornings of Japanese conversation practice. Before departure the students signed their agreements, packed vegetarian provisions and printed name cards to exchange. In Gifu, Mr. Chen interpreted, Okazaki looked after our transport and kept a record of the week, and Shotoku's staff accompanied the students at every step. Vegetarian food is not easy in Japan, and the university took the students to a supermarket themselves.

7日間：講義、勤行、寺院

聖徳側は一週間の充実したプログラムを用意してくださいました。講義は日本仏教史から浄土真宗の教義と都市開教、さらに臨床宗教師の活動へ。学生は浄土真宗の勤行に参加し、儀式を導いてくださったのが大学で教鞭も執る僧侶であることを知りました。9月29日には詹場主任秘書が経済情報学部で、9月30日には曽堯民教務長が仏教文化研究所で講演し、両校10年の講壇交流の伝統を受け継ぎました。学生交流会では法鼓の学生が台湾と法鼓山について発表し、真定法師のアカペラが会場を沸かせました。

出発前の夏休み、陳先生は木曜午前の日本語特訓を三回、自主的に開いてくださいました。事前説明会で学生は行政契約書に署名し、菜食用の携行食を整え、交換用の名刺を用意しました。岐阜での一週間、陳先生が通訳を務め、岡崎さんには交通と記録にご尽力いただき、聖徳の職員の皆さまが学生のすべての行程に寄り添ってくださいました。日本で菜食を続けるのは容易ではなく、大学側が自らスーパーへ案內してくださいました。

Our thanks to the teachers and students of Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University for their warm hospitality. Professor Ninagawa of the Institute of Buddhist Culture looked after the students from arrival to departure. Professors Hōko, Jōfuku, Nishikawa, Manabe and Kochi taught classes and introduced their faculties and campuses; Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Narita shared their practical experience of clinical chaplaincy and urban propagation; Professor Kanō welcomed Professor Chan's lecture into his class, with Mr. Huang interpreting. Odajima, Mori, Kawamura, Toki, Iwago, Ibuki, Nokura, Tamiya and Koyama of the university staff took care of everything from scheduling to on-site support, and Okazaki looked after our transport and kept a record of the week. Thank you, too, to the Shotoku students who showed our students around and shared meals with them.

DILA was represented by Secretary-General Chan, Dean Zeng (programme director) and Mr. Chen (group leader). The programme was made possible by donors' support, for which we are grateful.

What comes next

From a lecture on Yogācāra in 2015 to a group of students attending classes in Gifu and chanting at Nishi Hongwanji in 2026, this path has taken eleven years, and it continues.

これから

2015年の唯識の講演から、2026年に学生たちが岐阜の教室で授業を受け、西本願寺で読経するまで、この道のりは十一年に及びました。そして、これからも続いていきます。
